A year and a half ago I turned up to Rush skate park with a pair of quads and zero skating experience. Today, I am the proud new owner of the V13 David Sizemore skates by Valo, courtesy of Greenover Sports and Void Magazine. My name is Kate, and this is my new blog following an on-going journey about learning to roller blade. I am still very much a beginner but I’ve come a long way from where I started and trust me if I can do it (a 25 year old Dental Nurse and Massage Therapist), then you can definitely do it!
I wasn’t exactly a natural, my first attempt of rolling down a flat bank resulted in a butt slam that left me bruised for months. I literally thought I’d broken my coccyx! So much so that I nearly gave up there and then. However, after a few months of practising the basics and rolling timidly around the park, I decided it was time to get some blades as quads had proven to be clumsy to manoeuvre on the ramps, due to the wide spread of the wheels and bulky toe stop. I got my hands on a pair of Remz hr1.2s and straight away my blading improved massively and the park just opened up.
As for “why do I still skate?” It’s hard sometimes to explain why you like something, but with blading when you get it right and you’re gliding up and down the ramps it feels so light and fluid and there’s that rush of adrenaline that keeps you going back for more. I think you have to have a certain level of tenacity not only to try something new but to get up after you fall and do it again. The sense of achievement you get after you’ve been trying the same thing over and over and then finally nailing it is so satisfying.
I really love blading and I feel like I’ve grown to be a part of this amazingly talented blading community. I take inspiration from these guys every time we skate and that gives me the motivation to get better and not give up, cause believe me, there’s been moments when I wanted to.
I’ll be keeping you updated every month with photos and a blog for Void Magazine where I’ll be telling you about my skating and stories from the blading world. I hope that this blog will inspire more people to grab a pair of skates and have a go as it truly is a brilliant sport and it’s going nowhere but up.
