Always looking to step up their game, Phoenix scooters have released their latest range of deck, the ION. The ION comes in two sizes; 4.5” x 21” and 5” x 22”, making it perfectly suitable for riders of all styles and builds.
With the new range of ION decks, Phoenix have chosen to cater for riders of all styles and have designed two individual decks under the name ION. The decks target riders of middle to professional skill levels and are much lighter than other decks of the same size. The ION decks also feature one of a kind, 2D forged and CNC’d headtube that extends perfectly into the deck and provides additional structural support.
The smaller ION decks comes in at 4.5” wide x 21” long and weighs a mere 3.8lbs/1.72 kg. This means that the deck is incredibly light for its size and allows for riders to throw that extra whip or pull tricks around that little bit faster.
The larger ION is 5” wide x 22” long and weighs in at 4.2lbs/1.90kg. Again, this makes it much lighter than other decks of this size and allows you to throw tricks that would usually be much more difficult on decks of the same length and width.
The ION’s 82.5 degree headtube angle greatly suits all aspects of riding, and this, coupled with the deck length, provides a very stable balance point.
The decks have been made with 3 degrees concave which adds points to balance and coping control while also making it easier to catch and land tricks. As well as this, the decks are bolstered with 6061 Heat Treated alloy, which provides even more strength to an already sturdy deck design.
All ION decks also come with awesome looking water transferred decals on the bottom of the deck as well as the headtube. This makes sure that the deck will stand out on any setup and makes the ION a great addition to any scooter!
The ION 4.5” x 21”
How it rides
The ION 4.5” is a really nice deck to ride and I felt at home on it immediately. This deck is really light for its size and I was able to throw tricks such as whips and bri flips with ease. The width of the deck, combined with the concave, made it very easy to catch and also made grab tricks easy to pull.
I feel that the 4.5” ION is built to cater for any rider, but in particular park riders who like to go big, but still retain their techy tricks and combos. This makes the ION the ideal hybrid deck, as it lends itself to all manner of riding.
In my opinion, this is the best standalone deck I have ridden straight out of the box, mainly due to its adaptability in all areas of riding. The 4.5” ION looks stylish, its specs are all on point and it feels really smooth and nice to ride.
The ION 5” x 22”
How it rides
The ION 5” x 22” is a pretty big deck which is ideally suited to steezy flow riders, as well as being at home in a street environment. Again, the deck is very light for its size, and I was able to throw tricks which are usually suited to more compact decks.
The width of the deck made catching tricks simple and I felt very stable while riding on all kinds of ramps and transitions. I also found that rails were a bit easier while riding this deck as its width provides a lot of balance while in the grind.
An added bonus is that the 5” ION fits both 110mm and 125mm wheels as standard, so you can roll whatever size wheels you want straight out of the box.
The ION 5” x 22” deck is a smooth ride that is suited to larger riders who have more of a street or flow style. It is super light for its size and provides a solid platform for all manner of tricks. I personally think that this is one of the nicest, large decks that I have ridden as it incorporates everything required into one package
