This month the Brixham based Grit scooter pro rider Billy Kendal took time out of doing endless rewinds at his local to review a few of his current favourite tunes
Of Monsters and Men – From Finner
The five piece indie folk group who famously had their tune dirty paws used for by Apple for the introduction video of the iPhone 5 are not just a one hit wonder. This Icelandic born group have a built up a wonderful back catalogue of melodic but catchy tunes since forming in 2010. They’re only album to date ( My head is an animal ) is testament to how well this group can put together great magical feel good sing along tunes that still have some heart and soul. From Finner is no acceptation to this rule and its clear right from the start as a simple but strong melody is set via an acoustic sounding guitar. The tune slowly builds up step by step, first with magical and almost other worldly lyrics and then followed by a deeper more defined beat. This all comes to a crescendo in the shape of what can only be described as a feel good chorus, yet the whole tune remains to feel gentle throughout. This tune definitely puts you in a good mood, which is what I like about it especially when I’m riding with my mates on one of those perfect summer days
The Jungle Giants – Back to the Start
Hailing from Brisbane in Australia, The Jungle Giants have produced some wonderfully awesome tunes. Their cheerful, catchy guitar riff based pop music is infectious to all who listen and why wouldn’t it me? Everyone needs a good dose of the good times, happy feel music they produce so well. Although their album ( Learn to exist ) is a medley of musical tones and is not all sunshine and hand clapping, the track Back to the start is one of those. This high energy track kicks off in just the way it means to go on and i love it just for that and so should you. Go check out back to the start and go check out the rest of the jungle giants tunes, you won’t be disappointed.
The Strokes – You Only Live Once
Everyone knows who the Strokes are and if you don’t, where in the hell have you been over the last Fifthteen years of music? The American born Indie Rock band have been setting the standard form which other bands work from for years now. Their first album ( Is this it ) has become a classic and help build the band a huge worldwide following. Although some might say albums and tunes since have lacked the same fire and feel I would have to disagree. The opening track from the album First Impressions of Earth is an effortlessly cool and very much vintage sounding Strokes track. Julian Casablancas’ leering vocals drift in and out over some classic and catchy guitar hooks that create another fine Strokes tune. Some might say its nothing new and just a rehash of what has been done before but all I can say to that is, don’t fix what isn’t broken!
Hendersin – Kids
Don’t usually listen to hip hop but Tyronne “Hendersin” Henderson offers up a different angle on the genera than most. From a small town in Western Massachusetts, Hendersin offers up a fresh combination of Fun,intellectual and emotional lyrics that are backed by light playful beats. Six mix tapes and one album ( Henny In Ya System ) that topped out at 85 on the iTunes chart shows that he is on the move and it won’t be long before further success is secured. The track kids hits all the right notes; fading in gently from nothing with a beautiful melody that instantly put you at ease. The lyrics are insightful while the hook brings structure and balance to what is a wonderfully crafted track that can’t help make you feel warm and fuzzy inside.
